Easter - Passover

In tribute to both holidays I made a tiny display taking a little break  from other activities.  Before I show you this, I want to share with you a very cute pair of eggcups that my daughter
Nilly created. These are 1:1 scale.

I composed this little scene with gifts from Jennifer and Gonda.  I only added a bit of grass.

A basket with colored and chocolate eggs and a basket with gifts received from Monika, a chocolate Fimo bunny made by me and more chocolate eggs.  The chocolate teddies are painted beads.

Happy Holidays!

Daria sent me a Russian fun questionnaire with three questions to the craftsperson.  The person who receives it can make up three questions of his own to answer. Daria's questions are

1. Have you ever thought of selling your crafts?

2. Do you have a friend around you who caught the miniatures bug because of you?

3. Do you ever feel guilty about abandoning other duties in favor of spending time on crafting?

Answers

1.  No I never think of selling my crafts, I love giving things I made  to persons who
appreciate my work. I also love making swaps.

2.  I don't think anyone became a miniatures crafter because of me, but I do have a few local
friends who make beautiful miniatures and miniature scenes.  In fact,  only today a friend
called and asked me if I'd like to take part in a gallery exhibition, together with her and a
few other miniaturists. The trouble is they live in other cities, far from me.

3.  Dear Daria, there is never a moment that I don't feel guilty.  I am always behind with my daily
house chores, I hate to return things to their proper place when I know I'll need them again soon,
and my table always needs tidying up.

Since I'm allowed to pass this on to three friends, I choose AscensionMieke and Julia. I leave you
the same questions. You can, of course, change and ask questions of your on if you pass this on.

THANK YOU DARIA

A warm welcome to my new follower Carla Gabriela . Thank you for following.

Popular Jewelry Designers How Did They Acquire Start?

How jewelry designers got were only available in their career is apparently a very interesting subject to several people. Did they hit the earth running and become a overnight success? Were they "discovered" on a beach stringing shells through some wealthy investor exactly who financially nurtured them to the sophisticated artist they evolved into? Or did they slog it out for 19 years and gradually grow into fame and fortune?

There's just something compelling and thus attractive about jewelry designers. I don't think a lot of other peoples' occupations stir the same kind of fascination and excitement. "Oooo, you are an insurance lawyer! Whoa, how exciting! What made you need to practice insurance law? inch Nope. It just doesn't happen.

How have some of the most famous, or popular, jewelry designers got their commence? David Yurman, for one, was not an instantaneously success. He and his wife never expected the organization to be the worldwide phenomena that it is today. They just wanted to produce enough money to settle the bills!

At 16, he had been exhibiting talent, producing little angel sculptures that he was selling at his secondary school. He studied for 1 year at NYU, left for California to hang out for a year in the artist's commune, came back again east to Greenwich Village and started studying with such famous sculptors because Jaques Lipshitz and Theodore Rozack. He was apprenticing to be a sculptor with Hans Truck de Bovenkamp when this individual met his future wife, Sybil Kleinrock.

Like numerous other designers' stories, things began to happen when Sybil started wearing David's pieces. An art and craft gallery owner wanted to purchase one of David's masterpieces that Sybil was wearing at an art opening in 1970, which, along with other essential sales, prompted them in the first 1970's to open Putnam Art Works near your vicinity.

During that decade, they will spent their time accomplishing art fairs, developing the craft, exhibited their graphics and jewelry, and learned industry for fine jewelry. Throughout 1980, the company David Yurman was given birth to, and by the mid-80's acquired already established a nationwide reputation and was put on show in Saks Fifth Opportunity, Neiman-Marcus, Bloomingdales and other high-end retailers. He rocketed to help super-stardom when he made the Yurman signature cable television bracelet, an oxidized twisted sterling cuff accented with gold, precious and semi-precious jewels.

I've studied the early careers of countless famous jewelry designers, and they're all so different! Many have studied extensively, others are self-taught. Some had the main advantage of capital backing from people, others slowly built the reputation and following, one piece of jewelry during a period.

But almost all jewelry artists had the one thing in common: persistence! It took David Yurman 15 to 20 years to offer the beginnings of the success his company now possesses internationally. David and his wife trudged car decade of the 70's doing art shows, slowly building his clientele and reputation as he developed and improved upon his technique and style.

David and Sybil may well not have understood or formulated their goals at the beginning, but I'd be prepared bet my firstborn child that as time upon went their goals evolved into razor sharp. There is the one thing I can guarantee, nevertheless, being a jewelry custom myself. They LOVED exactly what they did, and accomplish. Nobody spends that enough time on a path unless there're passionate and single-minded about this. Nothing gets in the way. Failure will not prevent them. Hardship and lose hope are obstacles to conquer. A person doesn't just act as a jewelry designer; you are a jewelry designer. It's greater than love; it is who we have been.

I'm sure David Yurman and is particularly asked incessantly how this individual became a jewelry custom. I'm asked that question frequently. Sometimes I provide the flippant simple answer. "I made a necklace, and I sold it. Voila! AndreaGems was given birth to. " And it's accurate, in the most floor of ways.

But in fact I was at a crossroads in my life. As a successful broker in downtown Chicago for 19 years, I was living the nice life. But I was so sick and tired of what I was accomplishing, and I'd been tired for an extended time. I felt like lifespan was being slowly sucked outside of me. I couldn't imagine carrying this out for much longer, aside from for the rest of my life. But my husband and also I was a two-income couple of. Our lifestyle (and mortgage) was depending on two high incomes. I was a prisoner involving my job.

I originate from a family of artists. I knew that I possibly could no longer turn my back on my innovative side. But how could I earn cash and be creative at the same time? This was a extremely tough period. A caterpillar crawling outside of his cocoon turns right into a butterfly. What was this caterpillar going to turn into?

So what did I actually do to help me contemplate that period? I cleaned the house! I cleaned out cabinets, the garage, drawers, and in one drawer there were a variety of necklaces that I had not worn in years. I bought a little angry because they weren't cheap and I didn't especially like these people.

I got a great idea! I'd remake these people into something I'd have on! What a concept! I made a decision to take a 2 hr stringing class, and I was shocked to determine what beautiful things I made from those ugly necklaces.

In which weekend, I went on a business trip to Miami with my husband, and wore one. One among his clients tried to purchase the necklace off involving my neck. I said no. He kept upping the purchase price. It got ridiculous. I didn't sell it simply because I thought he seemed to be an idiot.

The next evening we went out to dinner, I donned another necklace. Another client of my husbands' wanted to buy that necklace away my neck for their girlfriend. He was the sweetie pie, so I sold it to them.

By the end of in the near future, I had sold each of the remade jewelry, and I thought that something essentially important had happened. It absolutely was as if the air had parted and The almighty had pointed his little finger at me and said, "You have found ones calling. Now go possibly be fruitful and multiply... ones jewelry".

And that's what Used to do. I jumped into jewelry design feet first, real estate property be damned. I knew nothing concerning the business, but that didn't matter to me. I had discovered my calling.

Crocodile Tail Pendant

Following your creative instincts and creating new designs on the fly is a great way to stay productive and surprise yourself with new ideas. But planning out new projects in advance can pay off, too. I recently made a list of stitches that I had yet to share in the tutorials segment on Inspirational Beading, and as soon as I added Dutch spiral to the list, an idea started to form.

The combination of three bead types, and plenty of room for accents, seemed like the perfect place to start design inspired by the Egyptian crocodile god, Sobek. Although I’ve been sticking pretty close the the alphabet for the Egypt challenge so far, I couldn’t resist skipping ahead to get started on this necklace.

I decided to use some of my mother of pearl chips to represent crocodile teeth, with greens and some black lined topaz for a background. After a few inches of spiral, I decided I didn’t like the green iris and topaz together, so I switched out the brown for a soft cream instead. As I worked with the new palette, I also realized that it wasn’t going to be enough. A few sharp and curved shells would have the fearsome look I wanted, but it needed something more.

Dutch Spiral Rope Crocdile Bead Palette

I took a look through some photos of real crocodiles, and a picture started to form - shells as scales. I got to work right away on a triangle pendant with embroidered shell chips, and everything fell into place. Sobek’s necklace turned out exactly as I had hoped. The shell fringe in the Dutch spiral has the toothy look that I wanted, the mix of greens and fish-belly white looks reptilian and scaly, and the pendant provides an anchor that helps it all to stand out.

Time Capsule: March 2010

Three years ago this month, I tried a new necklace design that is a definite favorite to this day. There is so much trial and error when it comes to trying out new beading techniques; so when something sticks, it’s a big moment. I was pretty impressed with how the design turned out at the time, but I had no idea how often it would come up again.

The simple solution of stitching a front-drilled tagua slice to some St. Petersburg chain has become a go-to technique for all kinds of pendants. I love the way that the V-shaped beadwork provides just enough space for a pendant, and makes it easy to complement a focal with little fuss. Layering more than one pendant makes for even more possibilities.

Tropical Tagua Pendant

Often when I’m faced with a beading challenge that involves finding metal-free ways to use common materials, it doesn’t turn out as nice as I would like, but this necklace was a total success, that lead to many more design ideas.

Do you have a favorite eureka moment in beading?

Tiny baby Dolls

Hello dear readers,

Shopping before the holidays, can be a very hectic time. As was looking for small gifts for the young members of my family,  I found these tiny Moses in a Crib dolls at the one-shekel-store.  I bought the entire stock of 7 pieces for about two US dollars.  They are too cute to be given to children where they won't last long.  I'll keep them for myself. With a little makeover they can be upgraded. The cribs are onlyCarmen good for protection of the delicate dolls but too crude to be used.

Passover is when we read, again each year, the story of the Israelites exodus from Egypt and the story of little Moses in his crib left to float on the Nile and picked up by Pharoh's daughter who adopted  the baby who grew up as a royal prince.  Baby in a crib dolls are part of of Passover tradition.

A warm welcome to Britta.  A visit to Britta's relatively new blog is highly recommended. You'll find there a beautiful flower tutorial and lovely miniature displays.

I also want to thank http://sognatriceabordo.blogspot.co.il/  and Carmen for giving me this great award.
Thank you so much!

I wish you a wonderful week with my blessings

King Me

I guess I could have called this post "Checkmate" instead of "King Me", but I never really learned chess, checkers was more my game. I found this little table last year at a garage sale for $2.00. I mean who can pass that up! It had one broken leg, but nothing my hubby couldn't fix. It was also missing the inserted top piece, someone had thrown a peel and stick vinyl square in there, thank goodness not stuck yet. Originally I wanted to paint this yellow and transfer The Graphic Fairy French Bee in the center. I still think that would have been cute, but I decided to go natural instead.

Wear It Twice: Ombre

I’ve been working on a little side project using a blue-green ombre palette, and it has me craving more blends. Ombre is by far one of my favorite trends of late, because it works with any color, shape, or material you can think of. If you’re not familiar with it, ombre is the gradual blending of two colors. Think polymer clay Skinner blends, or dip-dyed silk. It can be one color blending into black or white, or a neighboring hue on the color wheel. No matter which combinations are used, it’s always gorgeous.

Fly Me Away

I started with a fun statement necklace using several shades of sea green, then added a dash of orange. A little lime to dance with the orange, and some browns to balance it all out, equals the perfect backdrop for colorful ombre jewelry.

If you want to give ombre palettes a try, here are some fun projects and tutorials.

Falcon Feather Amulet

For the latest piece in my Egyptian Gods series, I took some inspiration from Horus the falcon. Although I do love the look of the Wedjat Eye, I didn’t want to go with something quite so obvious, and instead looked to the falcon itself for ideas on how to capture this deity in jewelry.

The legends say that Horus’ eyes were the sun and the moon - the one that was plucked out by the usurper Set being the weaker moon. I decided I would try to recreate the look of real falcon eyes - shiny black orbs - each with colors representing those celestial bodies. Some druks and brick stitch would do the trick, but I didn’t want more than a pair of eyes. For the bulk of the necklace, I tried to recreate the look of falcon feathers, but with an Egyptian flair.

I chose a palette of turquoise, red, and gold, along with some light beige and black for stripes. The falcon eyes made the perfect connectors between a fringed amulet and straps of matching St. Petersburg chain. Rather than use a striped pattern for the whole necklace, I left the ends entirely black, which brings a little balance to everything.

Horus the Falcon Amulet

This necklace turned out even better than I had hoped, with the exception of the druks, which didn’t quite translate into natural looking bird eyes. I do love the way their shape stands out against the amulet and chains, and I may keep the idea in mind for future constructions.
